What do we have?

Use our inventory to find items you need. Link to booking form via the cover page. Unfortunately the add to cart or place hold function does not work for instruments or equipment the way it does for library resources.

Offsite equipment

You may be able to borrow equipment for extracurricular activities, for example events, gigs, concerts etc. that have been organised by a student, or that a student is taking part in. The items available for this have to be limited to a small selection due to teaching requirements.

Maintaining Equipment in Shared Spaces

The Conservatoire provides a number of teaching/practice, rehearsal & performance facilities to enable students space to develop their talents. Fitted for use from basic practice rooms, to specific specialist study, to sound proofed full ensemble purposes; these rooms are free for student use and can be booked seven days a week via the Room Booker system.

If you find that any equipment is not present when you expected it to be please let us know ASAP either by talking to one of the team at the Performance Resources counter or email us at performanceresources@lcm.ac.uk

Sanitising Equipment in Rooms

You can do your part in controlling the spread of illnesses by using the provided sanitisation products to wipe down all the equipment you use before and after you have touched it. Equipment and instruments are delicate and expensive to replace, please take care in how you use and clean these items to enable everyone to keep safe and enjoy their experience using conservatoire resources.

Pianos:

The keys of a piano are precision made from delicate materials. The use of strong acid or alkaline substances will permanently damage them, and allowing the keys to become wet may warp or swell the shape. Follow the below process to safely sanitise piano keys.

Using the “Piano Keys & Electronics” wipes provided gently wipe the keys from back to front, using a stroking movement rather than rubbing, try not to apply enough pressure to cause the key to sound, while ensuring good contact with each key. Do not spray disinfectant directly on to any part of the pianoDo not use the piano keys wipes on the body of the piano.

Amplifiers, PA mixers, Keyboards:

Do not spray disinfectant directly onto any electrical item. Use the “Piano Keys & Electronics” wipes provided to carefully wipe over every control, fader, dial and each socket you plug into. Please also wipe the handle of any amplifier you move. Keyboards must have all keys cleaned using a wipe, and as above, all controls and sockets. Please also wipe down the side of the keyboard if you lift or move it, this includes the keyboard stand.

Borrowing Items

Students can borrow items with minimal restrictions. There are three types of loans:

  • Day-loan: Borrowed and returned on the same day (first-come, first-served).
  • Pre-booked loan: Booked at least two working days in advance, for up to three days.
  • Long-term loan: Arranged through your course team for extended use (e.g. a semester or project).

All items must be collected and returned at the Performance Resources Counter.

Reserving

To reserve equipment for up to three days, bookings must be made at least two working days in advance. Availability may be limited due to teaching needs.

Returning

When you’ve finished using your loaned item(s), return them to the Performance Resources Counter at least 30 minutes before the building closes. Items must be returned in their original case, bag, or packaging, with all parts and accessories included.

Before accepting the return, staff will carry out a quick check:

If parts are missing without a reasonable explanation, the item will not be accepted and will remain on your account.
If the item is damaged and not reported, it will be referred to the Performance Resources Manager. You may be charged for repair or replacement. Normal wear and tear is expected, but please report any damage when returning the item to reduce your liability.

Fines/Restrictions

If a loan is not returned by the due date, you will receive an overdue warning. If it remains unreturned:

  • 1 week later: You’ll receive a reminder.
  • 2 weeks later: You’ll be contacted again and your borrowing access may be restricted.
  • 4 weeks after the due date: You will be charged the full replacement cost of the item plus a £5 administration fee per payment.

You are personally responsible for any item you borrow. Do not lend it to others or borrow on someone else’s behalf, as this may invalidate insurance and leave you liable for any loss or damage.

Your Instruments

Storage

Larger Instruments

Please use the self storage rails provided at St Peters Sq. on Lev 1 near the PR Counter and Studio 113, and on Lev 5 near the Tutorial Pods. You’re advised to bring a bike lock or similar to secure the instrument to the railings. You may be able to borrow a lock from the counter, however we have a limited number available.

Smaller Instruments

Depending upon there being space available, Students may store smaller musical instruments with Performance Resources during the counter opening times, providing they are in an appropriate case with approved photo ID securely attached (all wind instruments must be in a hard or reinforced case).

Responsibilities

Instruments should not normally be left overnight. If you have exceptional circumstances that require the storage of an instrument overnight please contact your course Programme Leader. Authorisation will be considered on a case by case basis.

Please note that personal items other than instruments must not be stored.

Instruments left overnight without authorisation may be moved into storage. This could potentially lead to a number of days waiting time to have the item returned to you.

All instruments must be covered by the Students own insurance as Leeds Conservatoire accepts no liability for loss or damage – all items are left at the owners’ own risk.
