Celebration & Belonging
At Leeds Conservatoire, we celebrate diversity and actively work to create a welcoming, inclusive environment where all students, staff and visitors feel they belong.
What This Page is About
This page introduces the work we do around Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) – from celebrating cultural events and lived experiences, to creating training and learning opportunities or learning spaces where everyone feels seen, supported and empowered to contribute. We explain how we support students from all backgrounds and identities, and share opportunities to take part in shaping a more inclusive Conservatoire.
There is a glossary of words and terms used on this page below, if you are new to some of the terms and would like more information.

Who We Are And What We Do
The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) team supports and promotes inclusive practice at every level of Leeds Conservatoire. Whether through policy, training, partnerships, events or community-led conversations, our aim is to create/center belonging in everything we do.
We work alongside students, staff and external partners to:

- Listen, respond and take action based on lived experiences
- Challenge discrimination and embed inclusive praxctices in teaching, learning and performance.
We are currently focused on 5 key themes, which act as pillars for the work we will be doing over the next few years. These themes are:
- Support
- Training & Development
- Belonging & Celebration
- Outreach & Partnerships
- Sustainable Practices.

What’s Happening
Amplify Network – Our EDI Network
Amplify is a student and staff-led network dedicated to uplifting voices, experiences and perspectives that are often marginalised in society. We hold space for conversation, reflection, co-creation, and celebration. Taking our time to engage the whole of our conservatoire community to discuss, learn and collaborate in an engaging way around who we are, what we care about and how we should build more inclusive and just environments across our industries and wider society.
All are welcome to co-create our inclusive, open-access network, bringing together students and staff for discussion, celebrations, social activities, insights and learning, rooted in equity and social justice.
This space will be for all of us to share lived experiences, shape events, and help build a Conservatoire that works for everyone. In particular we will:
- Hold monthly meetups and open forums
- Co-develop campaigns and celebrations
- Discuss topics you feel deserve more attention
If you would like to raise topics to discuss or suggest ideas for campaigns and celebrations – use our suggestion box below, or email equality@leedsconservatoire.ac.uk

FAQs
Why is EDI work important at Leeds Conservatoire?
EDI work is important to have in both higher education and the arts. It ensures that a broader spectrum of artists, perspectives, and cultural narratives are represented in artistic works, and fosters creativity and innovation through diverse experiences. EDI work can also identify and address biases that run through both industries (higher education and arts) and work towards ensuring that all students, regardless of their identity or background, have access to the resources and support they need to succeed. It is also important, in our commitment to equity, to educate on the realities of people’s different lived experiences within society as well as how they impact our specific industries.
