Using the library

How do I access e-resources and my library account?

On campus, many resources don’t need a password. If they do, and you’re working off campus you can log in ‘via institution’ – select Leeds Conservatoire from a list of colleges and then user your conservatoire username and password to log in.

You can view and manage your account at library.leedsconservatoire.ac.uk – log in with your conservatoire username and password.

How many items can I borrow?

Up to 15 items at any one time (not including music for large ensembles).
Items that can’t be borrowed will have a sticker on their spine that says ‘reference’.

When do I need to bring my loans back?

You will have 2 weeks (4 for music). Loans will automatically renew for 1, 2, or 4 weeks at a time until after the Easter break. You will need to bring your loans back if someone else has requested a copy and none are available. We will get in touch with you if this happens.

You can return books to the library counter, or to the book returns box by the lift in the café bar. All loans must be returned to the library before the end of the academic year. You can borrow resources over the summer break but must bring them to the library to be issued or re-issued before term ends.

Do I have to pay for library services?

No; all borrowing from the library is free, and we do not apply fines if you’re late returning your loans. Printing charges are standard across the conservatoire, and sale items are available at the lowest cost possible.
If your loans are more than 12 days overdue and you haven’t been in touch with us, replacement cost charges will be added to your account. You will be expected to pay these, or bring the items into the library to show that you still have them.

You will be considered responsible for replacement costs associated with any parts missing from sets that were borrowed on your library account. Likewise, if you lend a library item to a friend, it is still your responsibility to get it back to us.

Payments can be made by card in the library, or online via the PayPal link in KOPAC, the library catalogue.

The library doesn’t have what I need

If the library does not have an item that you need for your studies there are a some options available.

Requesting an item

If we do not have an item you need, you can complete a purchase suggestion form on your library account. We will consider your request and may purchase it for library stock or borrow it from another library.

SCONUL Access Scheme

This scheme allows conservatoire students and staff to access the libraries of other member institutions – you can visit another academic library to view their stock. Please see the SCONUL website for further information.

RNIB Bookshare

If you have a qualifying print disability (this includes sight loss, dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism, ADD and more) you can ask us for an account with RNIB Bookshare. Titles can be downloaded to read electronically or to adapt into various accessible formats (PDF, Word, DAISY, audio, BRF). You can see more details about this service here: https://www.rnibbookshare.org/cms/me/information-students-about-rnib-bookshare

If you struggle to use print resources and would like us to set up an account for you, please contact the library or the disability support team.

University of Hull Library

You can visit the university library to access all of their e-resources on-site and borrow from their collection. Their library’s Welcome Desk on the ground floor will issue you with a UoH student card that you can use in the library. You can see their online resources and search their library catalogue here: https://www.hull.ac.uk/choose-hull/study-at-hull/library/resources

You will need to take your conservatoire ID card with you.

Extra support

The library will buy large print copies of books and large print music (where available) if requested. Please specify that you require a large print edition by typing ‘Large print’ under ‘Edition’ on the suggestion form. Requests for e-books will also be considered.

It is possible to make copies of copyright works in formats suitable for Visually Impaired Persons without prior consent from the rights holder(s). The Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) Licence also allows enlarged photocopies for partially sighted staff and students.

Access is also available to many books online as pdfs or audio files through RNIB Bookshare. This is available to anyone with a qualifying print disability – if you think this applies to you, please ask us about setting up an account.

The photocopier/printers are supplied with white paper; the library keeps a supply of paper in other colours. If the library doesn’t stock the coloured paper you need, please ask us and we’ll add it to our collection if we can.

If there is anything else that can be provided to help you with your studies, please either contact the Student Disability Advisers or call the library on 0113 222 3458, e-mail library@leedsconservatoire.ac.uk or pop into the library in person to discuss your requirements.

Ensembles

Group Study and Small Ensembles

If you need music for your group study, you can use the purchase suggestion form for small ensemble pieces.

Please make sure you tell us specifically which module and ensemble you are requesting music for, including the names of the performers involved.

Large Ensembles

The library provides music for large ensembles either from our own stock or borrowed from other libraries.

Please keep music in its wallet, do not swap parts, and return all music and wallets to us. Only mark music with soft pencil and remove all marks before returning parts.

You can see what stock the library has for ensembles using the following lists:

Orchestral sets   |    Wind band sets    |    Jazz band sets

SU Groups

Your library contact for SU ensembles is Rebecca Woods. Make sure you plan in enough time to get music ready for your rehearsals; it can take longer than you think!

We need to know dates of first rehearsals and performances and any changes to these.

You have access to our wind band sets, orchestral sets and vocal scores. You can check what we have on KOPAC or use the lists under ‘large ensembles’. We will help you to find sets elsewhere if you wish to borrow or hire directly (you would need to arrange the loan yourselves).

We will sort the sets into wallets for borrowing, issue and return of items, and chase up late returns. Ideally, we will do this at the beginning of the rehearsal period and won’t add additional pieces throughout the term.

Keep in touch with us at every stage. and remember that we can’t produce sets of parts at short notice. Please give us good notice for borrowing items; at least two weeks before your first rehearsal.

We appreciate prompt responses to e-mails from the library. You can also help by letting us know as soon as possible of any missing or damaged parts and helping us to chase up late returners.

Finally, please treat music with respect so as not to damage it – only mark music with soft pencil and remove all marks before returning parts. Please keep music in its wallet, do not swap parts, and return all music and wallets to us.
