Provisional Adjustment Plans

Also known as a PAP, Provisional Adjustment Plans allow us to provide prompt assistance for any student who requires it.

About Provisional Adjustment Plans

The Provisional Adjustments Plan (PAP) process at Leeds Conservatoire is part of our ongoing commitment to inclusive practices, enabling us to provide prompt assistance for:

  • Students with unsupported disabilities and no Individual Adjustment Plan (IAP) in place
  • Students with substantial mental health difficulties likely to be long-term or ongoing
  • Students with declining engagement or those identified as having risk factors

Staff complete the PAP form on a student’s behalf if they:

  • Observe difficulties related to mental health or an unsupported disability
  • You inform a tutor or member of staff about a mental health difficulties or disabilities
  • They receive information about a student’s difficulties or support requirements, from a source like UCAS, the NHS, or another external body

If a PAP is completed on your behalf, you will receive a populated PAP template.

This process aligns with recommendations made for Higher Education Providers in the UK by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) in July 2024.

Leeds Conservatoire is committed to fostering inclusion, PAPs help us ensure that all of our students can be supported per their unique needs.

What a PAP Does

Do not be alarmed if you are sent a PAP document during your studies, as a PAP is designed to:

  • Offer you initial support when difficulties are first observed, identified, or disclosed
  • Allow you to disclose difficulties to a member of staff and not have to repeat your difficulties multiple times
  • Allow relevant staff to enact reasonable adjustments directly, these are then reviewed by the Disability Support Team to ensure compliance with the Equality Act 2010
  • Allow relevant academic staff to enact alternative assessment arrangements directly, which are all reviewed by the Disability Support Team to ensure compliance with the Equality Act 2010
  • Help to offer reasonable adjustments if you have not accessed support for a disability/mental health difficulty before, but are struggling to engage fully in your studies due to these difficulties

Opting Out

If you receive a PAP but do not want to receive support, you can request the removal of a PAP put in place by a staff member by replying directly to the email containing their PAP document. Full instructions for opting out are provided in the email sent to you containing the PAP document.

If you request removal, you will receive full confirmation that the plan has been removed once this has been processed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you have a PAP and an IAP in place at the same time?

No, you can only have one form of adjustments plan in place at any given time.

As Individual Adjustment Plans (IAP) contain more detailed support and allow you to request tailored adjustments yourself, PAP documents will be removed for if you request an IAP.

However, any relevant details from removed PAP documents are included on your IAP, unless you have explicitly asked the Disability Support Team to exclude the information from the removed PAP document.

What if a PAP is put in place for an injury, or short-term condition?

If a PAP is put in place for a short-term illness, injury, or other temporary condition, it will be removed at the end of your next assessment period. As it is unlikely to cause substantial difficulties to daily activities and last 12 months or more.

However, if the difficulties detailed in the PAP meet the requirements to be considered a disability–as described by the Equality Act 2010–it will continue to exist beyond the assessment period.

You will always be explicitly informed at the time of the PAP removal through your conservatoire email.

Who can see if I have a PAP or IAP?

Relevant staff are given access to the most recent PAP or IAP in place to ensure that reasonable adjustments are implemented appropriately, which they can view for each of their students

You can find your most recent PAP or IAP in your conservatoire email account. Search for “Support Summary” in your conservatoire email account, and you should see each version of PAP and/or IAP you’ve received.
